Expedition to Kenya

Straddling the equator, The Republic of Kenya lies on the east coast of Africa and is bordered by Ethiopia to the north, Somalia to the northeast, Tanzania to the south, Uganda and Sudan to the west, with Indian Ocean running along the southeast border.

Kenya gained independence from the UK in 1963. The current President, Emilio Mwai Kibaki, was elected in December 2002. Today, regarded by many as the ‘jewel of east Africa’, Kenya offers some fine beaches, magnificent wildlife and scenery and an excellent tourism infrastructure.

One tenth of all land in Kenya is designated national parks and reserves, covering all habitats from desert to mountain forest. Between the lowlands of the coast and the summit of Mount Kenya there is rolling savannah that has now become home to game parks such as the Masai Mara, Samburu and Tsavo. There are lush, agricultural highlands which support coffee and tea plantations and just north of Nairobi the most spectacular stretch of the Great Rift Valley. Mount Kenya National Park is a popular destination for visitors wanting to climb Mt Kenya. At 5199m, it is Kenya’s highest point and the second highest mountain in Africa. At the summit it provides some stunning views across Kenya and the surrounding plains.

During Kenya’s early history it became the settling place for huge numbers of tribes from all over Africa and today still includes around 40 different tribes all with their own language and cultures. The most famous of these tribes is the tall, red-clad Masai, who still lead a traditional semi-nomadic lifestyle of cattle herding along the southern border.

From the coast to Mt Kenya and from national parks to tribal communities, for all those in search of adventure, Kenya is the ideal destination.

Example Itinerary*

  • Climb Mount Kenya (5199m)
Mt Kenya is the highest point in Kenya and the second highest peak in Africa. Point Lenana (4985m) is the highest point you can walk to and provides stunning views of the surrounding plains and Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania (on a clear day!).

  • Community & Environmental projects
Working with a local community you’ll be amazed at what you can learn from each other. Past projects have included construction of a school classroom, painting classrooms with teaching aids such as the alphabet, and teaching English. Playing football is also obligatory!

  • Safari – ‘Journey’ in Swahili
Visit one of the many national parks in Kenya and camp out over night with Africa all around you. Lake Nakuru National Park for example, is home to a large ‘Pat’ or colony of Flamingos, which make the water appear pink

  • Rafting Ewaso Nyiro River
Using 3 person inflatable rafts we can paddle our way down river through the Laikipia region. As we pass through stunning rocky outcrops we may see some of the local animals and chat to some of the Laikipiak Masai as they go about their daily lives. The river is grade two and the journey is fun as we paddle our way downstream viewing and interacting with the Laikipiak Masai.

  • Camel Trekking
Trek through Laikipia for three days with the camels carrying our camping gear and allowing us to experience a nomadic lifestyle typical of the tribes around us. In the evening we settle down for dinner round the fire then take our bed rolls off the camels, find a place to hang our mosquito net, lay back and watch the stars, listening to sounds of the African wilderness.

  • Carnivore Restaurant
Finish your expedition with a final night meal at the famous Carnivore Restaurant. Its specialty is meat and includes Impala, Kudu, Camel and Crocodile as well as more normal meats such as Pork, Chicken and Beef. They also have a vegetarian selection!
