Nepal is a land locked country on the Asian subcontinent and shares its borders with Tibet in the North and India to the south. The greater part of the country lies on the southern slopes of the Himalaya and extends down from the highest peaks through hill country to the upper edge of the Ganges Plains.
The kingdom of Nepal was created from an amalgamation of small principalities in 1768 under the then King. Nepal then became a buffer state between the British Empire and the territories to the north. The country became formally independent in 1923 but it was not until 1947 and the total withdrawal of the British from the region that Nepal achieved genuine independence.
For many years Nepal was a secret, unknown country but in the 1950’s it started to become popular for mountaineers and trekkers and in the late 80’s restrictions on tourists visiting other areas were lifted. In addition to a distinctive ancient Hindu and Buddhist culture, Nepal has the world’s highest mountain, Everest, and spectacular scenery and wildlife. For walkers and trekkers it is a truly fantastic destination with picturesque hamlets and mountain villages linked by hundreds of trails that have been used for centuries.
The Nepalese government has now set aside more than 35 per cent of the total area of the country as natural sanctuaries and has nine national parks and three wildlife reserves. These are located in both mountainous zones as well as in the tropical plains.
Whether you are looking to trek through the awesome scenery; take in the beauty of the temples or simply try and spot the infamous Yeti, Nepal is truly a country waiting to be explored.
